"Mission Shakti" Anti-Satellite Missile Test By India Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that India has entered an elite space club with Defence Research and Development Organisation blowing up a live satellite in a Low Earth Orbit over 300 Kms within 3 minutes using Anti-Satellite Missile. DRDO scientists successfully carried out the test from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island launch complex, in Odisha. This mission was named as Mission Shakti, with this India has become the fourth country in the world which has mastered the Anti-Satellite Missiles namely America, Russia, China and now India is the latest entry to it. Anti Satellite Missiles are space weapons that are designed to destroy other satellites for strategic and military purposes. What message does India want to give to the world? There's a very small group of countries that have this technology and India wants to demonstrate that it is in that elite club and is going to shape the rules of weapons in space as when decisions and rules are made. But there's another aspect to it as well if you can knock out a satellite in space you can probably knock-out ballistic missiles in space too. And India is going to show that it has not only Anti-Satellite missile capabilities but it has Anti-Ballistic missile capabilities too, which means India will be able to defend itself from nuclear missiles launched by other countries. Mission Shakti is a big achievement for the DRDO. India has not only successfully achieved the Anti Satellite missile and carried out Mission Shakti, but India did it without breaking any international treaty signed by India. As of 1967 Outer Space Treaty signed by India, which bans the use of weapons of mass destruction in space, basically nuclear weapons but not conventional weapons. Many countries pushing for a treaty that would make the use of both nuclear and conventional weapons illegal. Mission Shakti demonstrated India's ambition and footprint in space which is growing with a pace.
